Cardiff Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Cardiff Castle owes it’s earliest origin to the Romans who built a fort on the site in about the first century AD. The remains of the 10 feet thick walls are still to be seen today. Cardiff Castle is a perfect image of a Norman Castle and is a true relic of Norman times. Built in about 1091 by Robert Fitzhamon, Lord of Gloucester, the first building, arising out of the Roman remains, was a timber and earth building which was fortified with stone during the 12th century. The 1270’s saw the building of the Black Tower and the south gateway. During the 19th century, the 3rd Marquess of Bute and his architect, William Burges, gave the Castle a Victorian facelift . The fussy and flamboyant embellishments detract from the original features of the castle but is of course also part of it’s colourful past. The history of the Castle is a turbulent one of much conflict but since 1947 it has been in the care of the people of the City of Cardiff.
Right in the centre of Cardiff city you will find the lovely Cardiff Castle providing a delightful contrast to the usual hustle and bustle of a city. A fine selection of quality Cardiff hotels to ensure your visit is a pleasure.
