Lisbon Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Portugal’s rich maritime history is celebrated in the Belem district. The Belem Tower, a famous Lisbon landmark, was built in the 16th century as a tribute to Sao Vicente and served as a river lookout and an armed fortress to defend Portuguese shipping. The Tower also served as a prison through to the 19th century. The view from here is unsurpassed. Here too you will find the giant monument to the nation’s Age of Discoveries. Another interesting place to visit is the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos where intricate decoration adorns this peaceful place. The Belem Cultural Centre where the Museu do Design displays 20th century works with exhibitions and performances for those who prefer the very modern look. Here along the Tagus river in Belem, Lisbon’s original port, is much of historical interest to see and enjoy.
Lisbon's Belem Tower is but one of such a diverse collection of Lisbon sights and activities that you will find that your time spent here is probably too short! Make sure that you have booked comfortable accommodation in one of the fine Lisbon hotels just in case you have to extend your stay.
