Moscow Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Novodevichiy Convent & Cemetery was founded in 1524, when Moscow’s Kremlin was reinforced as a protective citadel, as part of a chain of fortified monastries to the south, and is situated on a prominent bed on the bank of the Moskva River. This lovely piece of Russian architecture soon became famous for the number of high-ranking ladies who were banished from court and sought refuge here. The most famous of these ladies was Sofia, sister of Peter the Great, who attempted a coup from behind the convent walls. When the coup failed, Peter spared his sister’s life, ordered the mass execution of the rebels who participated. Sofia was driven mad by the sight of the bodies of her supporters that were strung up outside her window.
